HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize and honor the 106th
4anniversary of the founding of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,
5Incorporated, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter
6fraternity established for African-Americans; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was founded on
8December 4, 1906, by seven young men, respectfully known as the
9Seven Jewels, at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman,
11Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison
12Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy, the
13founders of the Fraternity, recognized the need for a strong
14bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country;
15and
 
16    WHEREAS, The aims of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity are
17manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The mission of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity is to
19develop leaders and promote brotherhood and academic
20excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our
21communities; and

1    WHEREAS, For 106 years, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has
2played a fundamental role in the positive development of the
3character and education of more than 200,000 men; and
 
4    WHEREAS, The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha have shared
5countless friendships and a common belief in the founding
6ideals of the fraternity; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Alumni from Alpha Phi Alpha include many
8noteworthy leaders in the areas of government, business,
9entertainment, science, and higher education; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has 364 college
11campus chapters and 337 alumni chapters in the United States of
12America, the District of Columbia, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean,
13and Europe and 138 Chapters in the Midwestern Region, including
1430 in the District of Illinois; the Theta Chapter (1910) and
15the Xi Lambda Chapter (1924), both of Chicago, were the first
16college and alumni chapters, respectively, in the State of
17Illinois; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity continues to enrich
19the lives of its members, who, in turn, provide service and
20advocacy for the communities with a commitment to service and
21the uplifting of humanity; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3we recognize and honor the 106th anniversary of the founding of
4the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity; and be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That we commend all Alpha Phi Alpha brothers,
6past and present, for their bond of friendship, common ideals
7and beliefs, and service to the community; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That we express our best wishes for the Alpha Phi
9Alpha Fraternity's continued success and growth; and be it
10further
 
11    RESOLVED, That December 4, 2012 is officially proclaimed as
12Alpha Phi Alpha Day in the Great State of Illinois; and be it
13further
 
14    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
15delivered to the Midwestern Regional Vice President and the
16Assistant Vice President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,
17Incorporated, the Illinois District Director of Alpha Phi Alpha
18Fraternity, Incorporated, the Assistant Illinois District
19Director and the Presidents of the 30 College and Alumni
20Chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated of the
21Great District of Illinois.
