HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are deeply saddened to learn of the death of
4Dana J. "Double D" Davis of Peoria, who passed away on October
53, 2012; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Dana Davis was born on September 25, 1956, in
7Peoria to Shirley Jean and William "Mecie" Davis; he graduated
8from Manual High School and Bradley University; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Dana Davis began his sports career as a student
10assistant manager, keeping statistics and sometimes serving as
11referee while at Bradley University; while at Bradley
12University, he worked for former Grizzlies' team president and
13general manager, Dick Versace in the university's basketball
14program; he worked for 8 years as business and tour manager for
15funk legend, Bootsy Collins, in the 1980's; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Dana Davis spent 13 years with the Memphis
17Grizzlies, most recently serving as Vice President of
18Basketball Operations and Team Programs; his main duties were
19being responsible for business and logistics operations, as
20well as team programs, but as he interacted more frequently
21with players, he became a counselor, life coach, brother, and a
22friend; and

1    WHEREAS, Dana Davis was elected to the board of directors
2of the National Civil Rights Museum in 2011; he has been a
3long-term board member of the Peoria Citizen's Committee for
4Economic Opportunity (PCCEO); he was inducted into the African
5American Hall of Fame/Museum in 2007, and was awarded the Dr.
6Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Service Leadership Award
7by the King Holiday Committee of Peoria, Inc. in 2012; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Dana Davis directed the Mitchell "J.J." Anderson
9All Star Basketball Camp each year in both Peoria and Memphis,
10Tennessee; he worked with NIKE through the organization,
11Samaritan's Feet to distribute 200 pairs of shoes to
12disadvantaged youth; he initiated the Grizzlies' Day of Giving,
13bringing in Feed the Children to distribute hundreds of boxes
14of food to scores of needy families; he has raised thousands of
15dollars for worthy causes such as, St. Jude's Children's
16Hospital, PCCEO's Senior Meals Program, the Richard Pryor
17Memorial, and the Carver Community Center; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
19NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
20we mourn the passing of Dana Davis, and we extend our sincere
21condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
22him; and be it further
