HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The State of Illinois owes a debt of gratitude to
3the people of the United States of America, President Obama,
4and the United States Congress for their continued support of
5the domestic automobile industry; and
 
6    WHEREAS, In manufacturing, it is important to create a
7product that is high in quality, yet affordable to the target
8market, and is concurrently sustainable and profitable for the
9producer; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Our economy, and the domestic auto industry in
11particular, was faced with unprecedented challenges; these
12challenges, which in large part emanated from a maelstrom of
13rising energy costs, a massive credit crunch, and other global
14economic forces, combined in a way that threatened the
15existence of our nation's domestic automakers; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Clearly, this segment of our economy was far too
17important to the State of Illinois and the United States to be
18allowed to wither and potentially fail; and
 
19    WHEREAS, The U.S. automotive industry and the advancements
20associated with automotive transportation have been the
21lifeblood of the American economy for decades; American

1automakers have been responsible for many of the most important
2manufacturing advancements in the past century, and have been a
3crucial part of the "Arsenal of Democracy" that helped assure
4our victory in time of war; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Today, more than 3 million direct and indirect
6American jobs and countless numbers of retirees are dependent
7on the domestic automotive industry; therefore, a strong
8showing of support for our domestic automakers was critical at
9that important juncture in our nation's history; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Illinois auto workers produce the Ford Explorer,
11Ford Taurus, and Lincoln MKS in Chicago, the Dodge Caliber,
12Jeep Compass, Jeep Patriot, and Dodge Dart in Belvidere, and
13the Mitsubishi Gallant and Outlander Sport in Normal; and
 
14    WHEREAS, An American-made vehicle can be identified as an
15automobile with a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) that
16begins with a 1, 4, or 5; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Latest reports indicate that strong profits are
18being earned across the board by all 3 domestic auto
19manufacturers; and
 
20    WHEREAS, By taking difficult but necessary action, the
21American people have helped the auto industry add back more

1than 200,000 jobs, the best period of job growth for the
2industry in more than a decade; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
5we bestow our highest gratitude to those consumers in this
6State and the nation at large who believed that the domestic
7auto industry was too important to let die; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That we give our highest praise to our domestic
9auto industry, who, on their darkest day, found a way to
10continue to do business in a way that is both profitable and
11sustainable for generations to come; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
13transmitted to the President of the United States Senate, the
14Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and the
15members of the Illinois Congressional delegation; and be it
16further
 
17    RESOLVED, That we urge all Illinois legislators and
18citizens to support their neighbors, their community, and their
19country by considering an American-made car for their next
20automobile purchase.
