HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan began following
3the attacks on United States soil on September 11, 2001; and
4the members of the Illinois House of Representatives are proud
5to honor the men and women who serve, and have served, in our
6nations' armed forces; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The war on terror represents a global military,
8political, legal, and ideological struggle against
9organizations designated as terrorists or presented as posing a
10threat to the United States and its allies; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Members of the Illinois National Guard, the United
12States Air Force, the United States Navy, the United States
13Army, and the United States Marines have served in Iraq and
14Afghanistan with the goal of defeating terrorist organizations
15and defending United States citizens at home and abroad; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The war in Afghanistan, "Operation Enduring
17Freedom", consisted of 3 phases: toppling the Taliban,
18rebuilding the Afghan state, and a turn to counterinsurgency
19whereby United States forces protected the population from
20Taliban attacks and supported efforts to reintegrate
21insurgents into Afghan society; and

1    WHEREAS, The war in Iraq, "Operation Iraqi Freedom",
2consisted of 2 phases: a brief, conventionally fought war in
3which United States forces invaded Iraq and rapidly defeated
4Iraqi military, and a longer phase in which a U.S. led
5occupation of Iraq was opposed by an increasingly intensive
6armed insurgency; and
 
7    WHEREAS, One hundred and fifty-eight Illinois residents
8have lost their lives in the war in Iraq and 79 Illinois
9residents lost their lives in the war in Afghanistan; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
11Representatives are proud to honor the men and women who serve,
12and have served, in our nations' armed forces; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
14NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
15we declare April 18, 2012 as Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans
16Remembrance Day in the State of Illinois as a way of
17remembering the men and women from Illinois who bravely served
18in the those wars.
