HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate the alumni and
4current members of the Morehouse College Glee Club on the
5centennial concert of the Glee Club, to be held March 6, 2012
6at the Harris Theater in Millennium Park; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Morehouse College Glee Club was founded in
81911 and is internationally acclaimed for its rich tradition of
9performing a diverse repertoire, including standard classical
10choral literature, music of African-American composers, and
11heritage music, such as spirituals, work songs, and African
12selections; and
 
13    WHEREAS, The membership of the Glee Club is comprised of
14students throughout the United States and abroad; many study
15music, but there are also students representing other majors
16and academic departments of the college; and
 
17    WHEREAS, The Glee Club has toured around the world,
18including Russia, Poland, South Africa, and the Bahamas; they
19have performed at Super Bowl XXVIII, the 1996 Olympics, and at
20the dedication of the Dr. Martin Luther King Monument in
21Washington, D.C.; and

1    WHEREAS, The Morehouse College Glee Club is recognized as
2the oldest all male glee club in the United States; and
 
3    WHEREAS, During its history, it has had only 3 directors;
4each successor director was a student of the previous director,
5beginning with Glee Club founder Kemper Harreld, succeeded by
6Wendell Phillips Whalum Sr., and continuing with current
7director David E. Morrow; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
9NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
10we congratulate the alumni and current members of the Morehouse
11College Glee Club on the centennial concert and wish them
12continued success in the future; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to Morehouse College Glee Club Director David E.
15Morrow as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
