HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, For 20 years DuPage County has served as a leader
3in conservation and environmental protection to ensure it
4remains a great place to live, work, and raise a family; and
 
5    WHEREAS, On October 27, 2011, DuPage County became the
6first county in the State of Illinois to receive the Governor's
7Sustainability Award for its efforts to preserve the
8environment for future generations; and
 
9    WHEREAS, For 25 years, the Governor has recognized public
10and private organizations in the State of Illinois for
11significant achievements in protecting the environment through
12sustainable practices; and
 
13    WHEREAS, The Sustainability Award serves as a validation of
14DuPage County's efforts to reduce emissions, save energy,
15increase air quality, conserve resources, and recycle waste
16materials; and
 
17    WHEREAS, DuPage County's initiatives have not only served
18the environment well, but have also resulted in good public
19policy; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Such sustainability initiatives include

1optimizing the county's traffic signal timing programs to
2increase traffic flow, reducing 2.32 million hours of driving
3time and saving 232,000 gallons of fuel; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Through the County's free Electronics Recycling
5Program, more than 2 million pounds of electronic waste have
6been diverted from landfills since 2008; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The County will save 2.4 million kilowatts
8annually through energy-efficiency improvements on its campus;
9and
 
10    WHEREAS, More than 5 tons of unused and unwanted
11medications have been properly disposed of through the Rx Drop
12Box Program which in turn keeps these hazardous waste items out
13of our waterways and soil; and
 
14    WHEREAS, DuPage County continues to work with businesses
15and residents to implement more sustainable programs and to set
16an example of how it can reduce its environmental footprint in
17a fiscally responsible manner; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
19NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
20we recognize DuPage County for its diligent work to preserve
21the environment for future generations.
