HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of LeRoy A.
4Ufkes, who passed away on October 18, 2011; and
 
5    WHEREAS, He was born September 8, 1923 in Bear Creek
6Township, Hancock County, the son of Fred J. and Tena M.
7Johnson Ufkes; on December 28, 1956, he married Joan Aleshire
8at St. Paul Catholic Church in Macomb; and
 
9    WHEREAS, He attended Basco High School for 3 years, and
10later graduated from Carthage High School in 1940; he received
11his bachelors degree from Carthage College in Carthage; he
12attended Texas Tech College in Lubbock, Texas and Louisiana
13State University, majoring in engineering; he received his
14Juris Doctorate with honors from the University of Iowa Law
15School in Iowa City, Iowa in 1950; and
 
16    WHEREAS, He was a lieutenant in the United States Army and
17served in Italy in World War II; he served on numerous State
18Commissions, including the Commission for the Status of Women,
19the Guardianship and Advocacy Commission, and the Illinois
20Court of Claims; he was Special Assistant Attorney General for
21over 10 years with the State of Illinois; he served an interim
22term in the Illinois State Legislature; he was a member of the

1Hancock County Bar Association, and he was an Illinois delegate
2for numerous Republican Conventions; and
 
3    WHEREAS, He was the director of the Board of Farmers State
4Bank of Ferris, the Union Bank of Carthage, and Memorial
5Hospital and Nursing Home; throughout his professional career
6he was a member of numerous other boards and commissions
7related to the practice of law; and
 
8    WHEREAS, He was a longtime attorney for the Church of Jesus
9Christ of the Latter Day Saints and a lifetime advocate for
10justice and fairness for the poor; he was also involved with
11the local Humane Society and enjoyed time with his best friend
12and cat Little Miss Amy; and
 
13    WHEREAS, He was a member of the Western Illinois University
14Western Athletic and Leatherneck Clubs and was an inductee into
15the Western Illinois University Athletic Hall of Fame; he was
16one of the charter athletic full scholarship donors of the
17Western Athletic Club through the Western Illinois University
18Foundation; he was a season ticket holder for St. Louis Rams
19football and the University of Iowa Hawkeyes; and he was a
20lifetime Cincinnati Reds fan; and
 
21    WHEREAS, LeRoy Ufkes is survived by his wife, Joan; his
22daughter, Dr. Fran Ufkes-Daniels and son-in-law, Dr. Lacy

1Daniels; and his sister, Ruth I. Ufkes; therefore, be it
 
2    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
3NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
4we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of
5LeRoy Ufkes; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of LeRoy Ufkes as a symbol of our
8sincere sympathy.
