HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate the congregation,
4staff, and Reverend Joseph Tito of Our Lady of Mercy Parish in
5Albany Park on the 100th anniversary of the church; and
 
6    WHEREAS, In 1911, a group of lay people petitioned
7Archbishop Quigley to locate a Catholic church in Albany Park;
8on May 18, 1911, Archbishop Quigley asked The Reverend H.P.
9Coughlin to consider the territory that would later become Our
10Lady of Mercy Parish; on June 1, 1911, Reverend Coughlin became
11the Pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Parish; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The first Eucharist was held at Patrick Henry
13School on Pentecost Sunday, June 4, 1911; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The event which was considered the testament to
15the Parish's livelihood was the baptism of Esther Traynor on
16June 13, 1911; the baptism was celebrated at the Traynor home
17because no church had been built at the time; and
 
18    WHEREAS, On December 3, 1911, the congregation celebrated
19their first Mass in the new church; since that time, three
20churches have been erected to reflect the growth of the
21congregation; in addition, a rectory, a convent, and other

1buildings were constructed to fulfill the increasing needs of
2the church community; and
 
3    WHEREAS, A pivotal part of the history of Our Lady of Mercy
4Parish includes the Sisters of Providence; Father Coughlin
5asked the Sisters of Providence of St. Mary of the Woods,
6located in Indiana, to send sisters to the parish; three
7sisters responded to the call, and established Our Lady of
8Mercy School in 1912; and
 
9    WHEREAS, 2011 will be a year of celebration for Our Lady of
10Mercy Parish as they look forward to the future; therefore, be
11it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14we congratulate everyone involved in the ministry of Our Lady
15of Mercy Parish in Albany Park and wish them continued success
16for years to come; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to Reverend Joseph Tito, on behalf of the
19congregation of Our Lady of Mercy Parish, as a symbol of our
20respect and esteem.
