HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Many places in the State of Illinois are
3significant sites of local, State, national, and world history;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, Visitors to these sites learn about historic
6people, ideas, and events that occurred there; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Such visits deepen our interest in, and
8appreciation of, history; and
 
9    WHEREAS, History helps us understand our place in the world
10and how we might improve upon it; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Increasing the number of visitors at historic
12sites will stimulate beautification, preservation,
13conservation, tourism, and business in the Illinois
14communities and counties where those sites are located; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The Illinois State Historical Society, recognized
16by the Illinois General Assembly in 1903 as a major contributor
17to the awareness and appreciation of history in Illinois, has
18already placed its markers at more than 400 historic sites
19around the State; and

1    WHEREAS, The Illinois State Historical Society is the only
2statewide not-for-profit historical organization; and
 
3    WHEREAS, The Illinois General Assembly and the Illinois
4State Historical Society now seek to heighten historical
5awareness in Illinois residents and visitors by calling
6attention to these markers and historic sites throughout the
7State; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
9NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
10we designate the week of February 28 - March 6, 2011 as
11Illinois State Historical Society Markers Awareness Week in the
12State of Illinois; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That all Illinois residents and visitors are
14encouraged to celebrate this week by visiting the Historical
15Markers Web site at www.historyillinois.org, learning about
16historic sites in their locales, visiting those sites,
17reflecting on their importance in history, communicating with
18others about them, and attending ceremonies commemorating
19them; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That the members of the Illinois House of
21Representatives are encouraged to participate in the events of
22this week with their colleagues in the Illinois State Capitol
