HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives recognize the important role that the Illinois
4territory played in the War of 1812; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Illinois territory was on the border of the
6conflict between Great Britain, then allied with many Native
7American nations, and the young United States of America; the
8British occupied a part and at times all of the Michigan
9territory and used Illinois territory to conduct raids on
10American settlements during the war; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The people of the State of Illinois want to
12recognize all of the Native American peoples who lived, walked
13on, or traveled the waters and trails of this territory which
14became this great State now called Illinois; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Although only a small company of U.S. troops were
16stationed in the Illinois territory, these brave men held their
17own against the British and Indian invasions and attacks
18against settlers in the area; and
 
19    WHEREAS, After the Treaty of Ghent was signed and the war
20ended, it was once again safe to work and settle in the
21Illinois territory; and

1    WHEREAS, Illinois gained statehood in 1818 and began to
2form its place in the history of our country; and
 
3    WHEREAS, The Illinois War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission,
4a federally recognized not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization,
5has been formed to recognize the important role that the
6Illinois territory played in this epic part of American
7history; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
9NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
10we urge the State of Illinois and the Governor to support the
11Illinois War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission and their efforts
12to recognize the upcoming anniversary; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be sent
14to the Governor of the State of Illinois to recognize the
15Illinois War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission.
