SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
ILCON Art. XIII, Sec. 9 new

    Proposes to amend the General Provisions Article of the Illinois Constitution. Provides that only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this State. Provides that this State and its political subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal status similar to that of marriage. Effective upon being declared adopted.

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT

 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
5SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that there shall be submitted to the
6electors of the State for adoption or rejection at the general
7election next occurring at least 6 months after the adoption of
8this resolution a proposition to add Section 9 to Article XIII
9of the Illinois Constitution as follows:

GENERAL PROVISIONS

12    (ILCON Art. XIII, Sec. 9 new)
13SECTION 9. MARRIAGE
14    To secure and preserve the benefits of marriage for our
15society and for future generations of children, only a union of
16one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a
17marriage in this State. This State and its political
18subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal status
19similar to that of marriage.

SCHEDULE
21    This Constitutional Amendment takes effect upon being
22declared adopted in accordance with Section 7 of the Illinois
