SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Madeleine Fuqua of Waukegan, who passed
4away on July 31, 2010; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Madeleine Fuqua was born May 18, 1923 in Detroit,
6Michigan and was a lifelong Waukegan resident; she graduated
7from Waukegan Township High School and attended the
8Universities of Illinois and Wisconsin and ultimately received
9her degree from Lake Forest College; and
 
10    WHEREAS, She was a Republican Precinct Committeeman for 16
11years and also on the Lake County Regional Planning Commission
12for 10 years; she was President of the Waukegan YWCA from 1952
13to 1954, a member of the chapter of Waukegan League of Women
14Voters, a member of the American Civil Liberties Union, a
15member of the Lake County Urban League Guild, a member of the
16Waukegan Housing Authority, Vice Chair of the Lake County First
17Governmental Study Commission, co-chair of the Lake County
18Committee for the Equal Rights Amendment, and was appointed by
19former Illinois Governor James Thompson to the Illinois Martin
20Luther King Commission; and
 
21    WHEREAS, She was a community activist; she was also a
22member of the Waukegan Garden Club, a volunteer at the Chicago

1Botanical Garden, a potter, a photographer, and an expert
2marksman; she loved playing bridge with her friends and
3traveling, especially to Africa; she was a founding member of
4the Waukegan Community Players and founding member of the
5Waukegan Green Town Gardens; she was a fundraiser for the
6Waukegan Symphony Orchestra; and
 
7    WHEREAS, In 1949 she married her childhood sweetheart,
8Ellis Fuqua, raising 2 children; she tended home and hearth,
9and carpooled woodwind quintets and rifle teams to
10competitions; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Madeleine Fuqua was preceded in death by her
12parents, Albert Mackey and Madeleine Givens Mackey; her
13husband, Ellis E. Fuqua; her daughter, Nancy Fuqua Erkkila; her
14son-in-law, John Erkkilla; and her grandchildren, Thomas J. and
15Anne Claire; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Madeleine Fuqua is survived by her son, Terry
17Fuqua and daughter-in-law, Gudrun; her grandchildren, Kristin
18and Erik; her brothers, Bill and Tom Mackey; and her sister,
19Roberta Mackey Rigger; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
22her family and friends, the passing of Madeleine Fuqua; and be
