SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of John E. Schulien, D.D.S., a former
4 long-time resident of Libertyville, who passed away on January
5 3, 2010; and
 
6     WHEREAS, He was born on May 9, 1942 in Chicago; his father,
7 the late John Adam "Ed" Schulien, and his late uncle, Matthew
8 Schulien, were co-owners of Schulien's Restaurant, a well known
9 historic Chicago establishment; and
 
10     WHEREAS, He was President of Sigma Delta Phi fraternity at
11 Loyola University Chicago during his senior year of college; he
12 graduated from Loyola University Chicago College of Dental
13 Surgery, and was a Captain in the Army Dental Corps in
14 Frankfurt, Germany from 1969 to 1972; and
 
15     WHEREAS, He had a private dental practice in North Chicago
16 for almost thirty years; he then served as the Facility
17 Director of the Ann Kiley Developmental Center in Waukegan,
18 Dental Director at the Whiteside County Federally Qualified
19 Health Center in Rock Falls, Dental Consultant with Science
20 Applications International Corporation (SAIC) at Great Lakes
21 Naval Base, and most recently as a Dentist at the Lake County
22 Health Department in Waukegan; and

1     WHEREAS, John was a trustee on the Libertyville Village
2 Board from 1985-1992, a Lake County Board Member from
3 1992-2002, and a member of the Lake County Forest Preserves
4 Board from 1992 to 2002; he was the Chairman of the Lake County
5 Republican Federation from 1994 to 2002; he was Past President
6 of the North Chicago Rotary Club, and had been involved in the
7 Navy League of the United States, Legatus, and Knights of
8 Columbus; and
 
9     WHEREAS, He was very active with Easter Seals, serving as
10 as Past Presidents of both the Lake County Society and the
11 Illinois State Society; he was Past First Vice Chairman of the
12 National Easter Seal Society Board, and Past Chairman of the
13 National House of Delegates; he was proud of his role in the
14 revitalization of downtown Libertyville with the starting of
15 the Mainstreet Libertyville program, and the creation of
16 Independence Grove through the Lake County Forest Preserves;
17 and
 
18     WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents John and
19 Eleanor (nee Carpentier) Schulien, and his step-brother,
20 Robert Dreis; and
 
21     WHEREAS, John Schulien is survived by his wife of 43 years,
22 Janice (nee Krozel); his seven children, John (Heather)

1 Schulien, Rita (James) MacAyeal, Keith Schulien, Rachel (Jon)
2 Balmer, Ruth Ann Schulien, Valerie (Alexander) Terray, and
3 Karen Schulien; and his four grandchildren, Teresa, Daniel,
4 Sophia, and Madison; therefore, be it
 
5     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
6 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
7 his family and friends, the passing of John Schulien; and be it
8 further
 
9     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 presented to the family of John Schulien as a symbol of our
11 sincere sympathy.
