SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Dr. Andrew Prinz, director of urban
4 studies at Elmhurst College, who passed away on March 26, 2009;
5 and
 
6     WHEREAS, He came to Elmhurst in the fall of 1969, from
7 Concordia College in River Forest, where he had taught for nine
8 years; he came to Elmhurst College to establish the Department
9 of Urban Studies; he passionately loved urban life, even at its
10 lowest ebb, and he communicated his enthusiasm tirelessly to
11 his students, not only in his classroom but also on the streets
12 of Chicago, Sydney, Beijing, London, Moscow, Amsterdam,
13 Toronto, and other cities where he took his classes on journeys
14 of celebration and discovery; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Dr. Prinz had a positive genius for friendship,
16 and a knack for reaching out to anyone within hailing distance;
17 and
 
18     WHEREAS, He grew up in Lincoln Park, on Chicago's North
19 Side; his father, a shoemaker, ran a thriving shop on Armitage
20 Avenue; he grew up speaking mostly German around the house; he
21 attended Luther Institute, a private school on the Near West
22 Side; he left Lincoln Park for Rock Island and Augustana

1 College; at Augustana, he pursued multiple majors in history,
2 political science, and geography in preparation for a career as
3 a high school teacher; at Northwestern University, he completed
4 a master’s degree in 1958 and a doctorate in 1963; and
 
5     WHEREAS, He was involved in politics and was elected
6 Democratic Party Committeeman for Oak Park in 1973; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Dr. Prinz actively recruited fifteen to twenty
8 students to his department in any given year for the urban
9 studies program and a chance to experience city life; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Dr. Prinz is survived by his wife, Carol, their
11 children, Kurt Prinz, Linda Hoffman, Diane Gardner, and Mark
12 Prinz, his brother, Edward Prinz, his six grandchildren; and
13 countless former students; therefore, be it
 
14     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
15 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
16 his family and friends, the passing of Dr. Andrew Prinz; and be
17 it further
 
18     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to the family of Dr. Andrew Prinz as a symbol of our
20 sincere sympathy.
