SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Hugh T. Smith, Sr., of Chicago, who
4 passed away on February 19th, 2009; and
 
5     WHEREAS, He was born July 21, 1921, in Chicago, the son of
6 Margaret "Maggie" Barrett and Arthur "Artie" P. Smith, Sr.; he
7 married the former LaVerne T. Sullivan on March 11, 1944; and
 
8     WHEREAS, He was a Chicago Police Officer for 37 years; of
9 those 37 years, he was a Lieutenant and Commanding Officer for
10 the Chicago Police Department Traffic Radar for 11 years, where
11 he was the escort for Presidents Ford, Carter, and Reagan; he
12 also escorted Pope John Paul II; Hugh played in the Semi-pro
13 Windy City Softball League in the summers; and he served his
14 country as a First Sergeant in the United States Army during
15 World War II; and
 
16     WHEREAS, He was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church of
17 Summit and the American Legion (Daris Garinvus Post 271); his
18 interests included golfing, singing Irish songs with his
19 relatives, and spending time with his family; and
 
20     WHEREAS, He was preceded in his death by his parents; his
21 wife, LaVerne; his daughter, Dorothy Jean McAdams; his sister,

1 RoseAnn McAleer; his brother, Arthur "Pat" Patrick Smith; his
2 uncle, Stephen Smith; and his aunts, Veronica Harold and
3 Elizabeth Smith; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Hugh T. Smith, Sr., is survived by his five sons,
5 Hugh T. Smith, Jr., and spouse, Kenneth M. Smith, Wayne P.
6 Smith and spouse, Donald F. Smith and spouse, and James A.
7 Smith; his grandchildren, Brad Smith, Heather (nee, Smith)
8 Dzurney, Kimberly (nee, Smith) ter Horst, Christian Smith,
9 Herman "Mickey" McAdams, Thomas Smith, and Matthew Smith; and
10 his great-grandchildren, Gracie Dzurney, MaryKate Dzurney,
11 Lauren Marie ter Horst, and Maria Elizabeth Smith; therefore,
12 be it
 
13     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
14 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
15 his family and friends, the passing of Hugh T. Smith, Sr.; and
16 be it further
 
17     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18 presented to the family of Hugh T. Smith, Sr., as a symbol of
19 our sincere sympathy.
