HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Sheldon
4 "Shelly" Rubin of Chicago on his retirement; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Dr. Rubin is a graduate of the University of
6 Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, Class of 1968; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Dr. Rubin is a Life Member of the University of
8 Illinois Alumni Association, and has been since 1969; he
9 represented Vet Med Alumni Association on the Board of
10 Directors of the University of Illinois Alumni Association
11 under the original organization; he served on the Constituent
12 Association Committee and Alumni Constituent Association
13 Review Committee from 1993 to May of 2000; he was involved in
14 the reorganization of Alumni Committees under the Constituent
15 Management Committee; and
 
16     WHEREAS, He is the past chair of the University of Illinois
17 Urbana-Champaign Alumni Relations Committee; he was honored as
18 an Illini Comeback guest in 2001 as 1 of 3 alumni honored by
19 University of Illinois students at the 2001 Homecoming; he
20 served the pets of Chicago while practicing for more than 41
21 years at Blum Animal Hospital, a Ten Veterinarian, American
22 Animal Hospital Association Certified Hospital in Chicago, and

1 is celebrating 57 years of pet health care; and
 
2     WHEREAS, He is a member of the University of Illinois
3 Presidents Council, a member of the American Veterinary Medical
4 Association, the American Animal Hospital Association, the
5 Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association
6 (President-2009), the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association,
7 the Illinois Academy of Veterinary Medicine (100 hours of
8 Continuing Education per year), the American Heartworm
9 Association President (2007-2010), the Feline Practitioners
10 Association, an active member of the Board of Directors of the
11 Anti-Cruelty Society for 28 years, a member of the Lincoln Park
12 Zoo Medical Advisory Board, and an elected member and Past
13 Chair of the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on
14 Public Relations, a 6 year position representing small animal
15 medicine; and
 
16     WHEREAS, He has leadership positions in many organizations
17 including: Public relations/education chairman for the
18 Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association and program
19 coordinator for the Illinois Heartworm Awareness promotion;
20 Co-Chair of the scientific session for the Illinois State
21 Veterinary Medical Association's annual convention;
22 spokesperson for the American Veterinary Medical Association
23 (AVMA); Alternate Delegate for Illinois to the House of
24 Delegates (AVMA), and he is the Past President of the Chicago

1 Veterinary Medical Association; and
 
2     WHEREAS, He has been the recipient of many awards,
3 including the American Animal Hospital Association's
4 Practitioner of the Year Award in 2003, the recipient of the
5 Life Time Achievement Merit Award from the Chicago Veterinary
6 Medical Association in 2004, the recipient of the President's
7 Award from the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association,
8 the Recipient of the Award of Merit from the Chicago Veterinary
9 Medical Association, and he was chosen Chicago Illini of the
10 Year by the University of Illinois Alumni Association in 2008;
11 and
 
12     WHEREAS, He was chosen as one of Chicago's top
13 veterinarians by Town & Country magazine and Chicago magazine;
14 he has been the guest on numerous Chicago and national radio
15 and television programs promoting responsible pet ownership,
16 representing veterinary medicine, and disseminating medical
17 information on pet care, including the Oprah Winfrey Show, WGN
18 Radio, Pet Central hosted by Steve Dale, WYLL Radio, Animal
19 Planet Radio, WBBM radio, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, WTTW (Public
20 Television), numerous cable outlets, and CLTV; and
 
21     WHEREAS, He is the author of six books, including,
22 Practical Guide to Dog Care, Practical Guide to Cat Care,
23 Emergency First Aid for Dogs, Emergency First Aid for Cats,

1 Selection and Care of your Cat, and Selection and Care of your
2 Dog; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Dr. Rubin organized and was president of Chicago's
4 first emergency clinic offering emergency care for Chicago's
5 pets after hours; therefore, be it
 
6     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
8 congratulate Dr. Sheldon "Shelly" Rubin for his years of
9 dedication to animal care and wish him the best in all his
10 future endeavors; and be it further
 
11     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12 presented to Dr. Sheldon Rubin as a symbol of our respect and
13 esteem.
