HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Bishop Horace E.
4 Smith, M.D. on the occasion of his 60th birthday in 2009; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Horace Earl Smith II was born in 1949 in the
6 Bronzeville neighborhood in Chicago; he was raised alongside
7 his 2 sisters and 3 brothers by his parents, Shirley and Albert
8 Smith; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Bishop Horace Smith graduated as an honor student
10 from Lindblom High School; he earned his bachelor's degree from
11 Chicago State University in 1971 and his M.D. from the
12 University of Illinois Medical Center in 1975; he then
13 completed his pediatric residency at the University of Illinois
14 Hospital in 1978 and his clinical fellowship in pediatric
15 hematology/oncology at the Children's Memorial
16 Hospital/Northwestern University in 1980; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Bishop Horace Smith served as Director of the
18 Comprehensive Sickle Cell/Thalassemia Program at Children's
19 Memorial Hospital for over 20 years; he is also an Assistant
20 Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern Feinberg School of
21 Medicine and is recognized world-wide as an outstanding
22 pediatrician in his field; and

1     WHEREAS, On March 28, 1980, Bishop Horace Smith was named
2 pastor of Apostolic Faith Church following the death of the
3 former pastor, Bishop John S. Holy; under Bishop Smith's
4 leadership, the church's congregation has grown from 200
5 members to 7,000 members; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Under Bishop Horace Smith's guidance, the
7 Apostolic Faith Church provides assistance by way of food and
8 supplies to over 4,000 homeless families around the Chicago
9 area every year; the church also has a scholarship program that
10 grants more than $100,000 each year, visitations to nursing
11 homes, outreach to correctional facilities, and a JobSource
12 program which, to date, has assisted more than 1,000
13 individuals in obtaining employment; the church also
14 broadcasts a Faithworks Ministry Telecast locally on WJYS-TV
15 and nationally on the Word Network; and
 
16     WHEREAS, In August of 2004, Bishop Horace Smith was
17 selected to serve as Presiding Bishop of the Pentecostal
18 Assemblies of the World, Inc., an organization with over 1.5
19 million members worldwide; he also serves on the boards of the
20 historic Wabash YMCA, the Family Institute at Northwestern
21 University, and the University of Chicago Cancer Research
22 Center-Community Health Advisory Board; and

1     WHEREAS, Bishop Horace Smith has taken part in numerous
2 humanitarian endeavors throughout the world; he serves as a
3 board member of World Vision USA; he and his wife travel
4 extensively to Africa to help those who have been devastated by
5 the HIV/AIDS pandemic; under the leadership of Bishop and
6 Sister Smith, the Apostolic Faith Church has provided resources
7 for the drilling of wells for fresh water, food, clothing,
8 education, medical assistance, and other goods and services;
9 and
 
10     WHEREAS, Bishop Horace Smith has been honored by numerous
11 organizations, including the Children's Miracle Network; he
12 has also been featured in various local and national
13 newspapers, magazines, and television programs; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Bishop Horace Smith has been happily married to
15 Susan Davenport Smith since 1976; together, they have 3
16 beautiful daughters, Lauren Elrod, Rachel Horton, and Emily
17 Green, and 3 sons-in-law, Brian Elrod, Courtney Horton, and
18 Patrick Green; therefore, be it
 
19     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
20 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
21 congratulate Bishop Horace E. Smith, M.D. on the occasion of
22 his 60th birthday and wish him many happy and healthy years to
23 come; and be it further

1     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2 presented to Bishop Horace Smith as a symbol of our esteem and
3 respect.
