HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Daniel E.
4 Thornburgh on the occasion of the 50th Annual
5 Journalism/Student Media Banquet, of which he was the founder;
6 and
 
7     WHEREAS, Daniel Thornburgh earned his bachelor's degree in
8 language arts from Indiana State University in Terre Haute,
9 Indiana in 1952; he earned his master's degree in journalism
10 from the University of Iowa in 1957 and his doctoral degree in
11 higher education and journalism from Indiana University in
12 Bloomington, Indiana in 1980; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Daniel Thornburgh has had a long and distinguished
14 career in education; he began his career as Director of Public
15 Relations for Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, serving there
16 from 1955 to 1957; from 1957 to 1959, he served as Director of
17 Information Services for Marshall University in Huntington,
18 West Virginia; from 1965 to 1979, he served as Director of
19 Journalism Studies at Eastern Illinois University; he served as
20 Chairman of EIU's Journalism Department from 1979 to 1984 and
21 as Professor of EIU's Journalism Department from 1984 to 1993;
22 from 1982 to 1983, he served as a visiting professor of
23 journalism at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, where he

1 taught public relations, news writing, and press & society
2 courses; from 1984 to 1988, he served as Director of University
3 Relations at Eastern Illinois University; from 1988 to 1993, he
4 served as Special Assistant to the President and Director of
5 University Relations at Eastern Illinois University; from 1993
6 to 1994, he was a visiting professor at the University of
7 Florida; following his service at the University of Florida, he
8 served as Professor Emeritus of Journalism at Eastern Illinois
9 University until his retirement; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Daniel Thornburgh has also worked extensively as a
11 professional journalist; he was a part-time reporter and news
12 writer for Radio Station WTHI in Terre Haute, Indiana from 1950
13 to 1952; from 1951 to 1952, he served as a reporter for the
14 Star in Terre Haute, Indiana; from 1957 to 1959, he served as a
15 special reporter for the Herald-Dispatch in Huntington, West
16 Virginia; from 1966 to 1969, he served as part-time night
17 editor of the Times Courier in Charleston; from 1967 to 1969,
18 he served as publisher and editor with the Banner-Times in
19 Casey; he has also served as a journalism consultant for Neoga
20 News, Illinois Opinion Writers, Coles-County Times Courier,
21 Effingham Daily News, Fairbury Blade, West Publishing Co., and
22 The Macmillan Co. and has served as a public relations
23 consultant for the American Dental Association, the Illinois
24 Dental Society, and the Illinois Press Association; and

1     WHEREAS, Daniel Thornburgh is a member of numerous civic
2 and professional organizations, including the Council for
3 Support and Advancement of Education (CASE), the Public
4 Relations Society of America's Central Illinois Chapter
5 (PRSA), the Society of Professional Journalists' Central
6 Illinois Chapter (SPJ), the Association for Education in
7 Journalism-Mass Communication (AEJMC), the Public Relations
8 Student Society of America, the Illinois Recreation Council,
9 the Charleston Rotary Club, Rotary International, the
10 Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, the Charleston City
11 Council, and the Charleston Recreation Board; in 1971, he was
12 named Citizen of the Year by the City of Charleston; therefore,
13 be it
 
14     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16 congratulate Dr. Daniel E. Thornburgh on his service,
17 dedication, and foresight to the nationally accredited Eastern
18 Illinois University Department of Journalism; and be it further
 
19     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20 presented to Daniel Thornburgh as a symbol of our esteem and
21 respect.
