HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Harry Reynolds on
4 his retirement from the Mattoon Journal Gazette; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Harry Reynolds was born and raised in Charleston;
6 he attended Charleston High school and graduated from Eastern
7 Illinois University with a bachelor of science degree in
8 political science; he is married to Doris K.( Martin) and has
9 two children, J.L and Michelle; he also has two sisters,
10 Dorothy Cruse and Georgia Nations; two brothers, David Reynolds
11 and George Reynolds; and one grandson, Lennon; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Mr. Reynolds was hired as a reporter by the
13 Mattoon Journal Gazette on February 5, 1969; he was a reporter
14 from 1969 to 1976; Mr. Reynolds received first place in
15 investigative reporting, second place for on-the-spot
16 reporting, and third place for his columns; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Mr. Reynolds has written over 4,200 columns,
18 beginning in March of 1969; over the years he has received a
19 number of awards for his columns, which range from local,
20 State, and national politics, humor, family life, and a variety
21 of other topics; and

1     WHEREAS, In 1976, he was named city editor of the Mattoon
2 Journal Gazette; in 1989, he was named editor of the Journal
3 Gazette, serving in that position until 2003, when he was named
4 Opinions page editor of the Journal Gazette and its sister
5 newspaper, the Charleston Times-Courier; State Representative
6 Bob Flider once worked as a reporter for the Mattoon Journal
7 Gazette with Mr. Reynolds and is a long-time friend; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Mr. Reynolds retired from the newspaper in
9 September of 2008; he has been working as a volunteer in the
10 Charleston office of State Representative Chapin Rose; Mr.
11 Reynolds is co-Scoutmaster of Mattoon Troop 77 and writes a
12 weekly column for the Tuscola Journal and the Tuscola
13 Tri-County newspaper; therefore, be it
 
14     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16 congratulate Harry Reynolds on his retirement and wish him the
17 best in his future endeavors; and be it further
 
18     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to Harry Reynolds as a symbol of our respect and
20 esteem.
