HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of former
4 Illinois State Representative Robert E. Mann, who passed away
5 on March 26, 2008; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Robert E. Mann graduated from the University of
7 Chicago with degrees in law and business; and
 
8     WHEREAS, As a young lawyer in 1962, Robert E. Mann was
9 chosen by Chicago's 5th Ward Democratic organization as a
10 candidate for the Illinois House of Representatives; not
11 content to remain dependent on the 5th Ward Democratic
12 organization, he broke away from the machine, running as an
13 independent Democrat in every subsequent race; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Robert E. Mann was a proud representative of his
15 Hyde Park district as a member of the Illinois House of
16 Representatives for 16 years; he, along with fellow legislators
17 Abner Mikva, Paul Simon, and Anthony Scariano, made up the
18 group known in Springfield as the "Kosher Nostra", a group well
19 known as champions of liberal causes who relished in bucking
20 party lines; he retired from the Illinois House of
21 Representatives in 1977; after his retirement, he practiced
22 law, yet never lost his zeal for politics and important issues;

2     WHEREAS, Robert E. Mann always considered himself to be a
3 servant of the under-represented people of this State; he was
4 well known for his vigorous debates on the House floor on
5 issues such as the death penalty, the increase of welfare
6 benefits, gun control, and the protection of the Lake Michigan
7 shoreline; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Robert E. Mann was the beloved husband of Sylvia,
9 nee Romagnoli; the loving father of Stephen Mann, Stuart (Sara)
10 Mann, Laurie (Shentil) Mann, and Elise Mann; the proud
11 grandfather of Alex Mendoza, Siena, Aaron, Kaia, Kezia, Simone,
12 and Remy Mann; the dear brother of Richard P. (the late
13 Rosalyn) Mann; the fond brother-in-law of Cynthia Romagnoli;
14 and the beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Robert E. Mann's independent spirit and
16 compassionate demeanor have been an inspiration to countless
17 legislators in this State and elsewhere to always serve the
18 people with kindness, respect, and dignity; therefore, be it
 
19     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
20 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
21 mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of the
22 great legislator Robert E. Mann; and be it further

1     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2 presented to the family of Robert E. Mann as an expression of
3 our sympathy.
