HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to encourage and support the
4 nomination of "The Munchkins", from the timeless children's
5 classic "The Wizard of Oz" (1939), for induction into the
6 Hollywood Walk of Fame; and
 
7     WHEREAS, The movie "The Wizard of Oz" is based on L. Frank
8 Baum's novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", which was first
9 published in 1900 by the George M. Hill Company in Chicago,
10 Illinois, and The Munchkins are among its most recognized and
11 beloved characters; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Following the success of "The Wizard of Oz", The
13 Munchkins have become a permanent fixture in the entertainment
14 world, as adaptations and variations on the role they made
15 famous have appeared time-and-time again in books, plays,
16 television, and movies over the past seven decades, including
17 "Return to Oz" (1964, television), "We're Off to See the
18 Munchkins" (1993, film); "The Muppets' Wizard of Oz" (2005,
19 television); and "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked
20 Witch of the West" (1995, Harper Collins); and
 
21     WHEREAS, Members of the original Munchkins continue to
22 entertain their legions of fans by appearing at yearly

1 festivals held all over the country celebrating their role and
2 the film The American Film Institute has recognized as one of
3 the greatest films ever made, including each of the past four
4 years at the annual Wizard of Oz Film Festival held at the
5 Hollywood Boulevard Cinema in Woodridge, Illinois; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Recognized all over the world, there are few
7 people anywhere that do not know the Scarecrow, the Tin Man,
8 the Cowardly Lion, the Wicked Witch, and of course, the famous
9 Munchkins; therefore, be it
 
10     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
12 believe that due to the preeminence of the film "The Wizard of
13 Oz" in American cinematic history, and the importance of the
14 worldwide iconic status of The Munchkins, that they should be
15 honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame; and be it
16 further
 
17     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18 presented to the surviving representatives of the Munchkins and
19 to officials from the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
