SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, On June 29, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower
3 signed into law the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 (Public Law
4 84-627; 70 Stat. 374) to establish the 41,000-mile National
5 System of Interstate and Defense Highways, later designated as
6 the "Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and
7 Defense Highways", and the Highway Revenue Act of 1956 (Public
8 Law 84-627; 70 Stat. 387) to create the Highway Trust Fund; and
 
9     WHEREAS, In 1990, the National System of Interstate and
10 Defense Highways was renamed the Dwight D. Eisenhower System of
11 Interstate and Defense Highways to recognize the role of
12 President Eisenhower in the creation of the Interstate Highway
13 System; and
 
14     WHEREAS, That web of superhighways, now spanning a total of
15 46,876 miles throughout the United States, has had a powerful
16 and positive impact on the lives of citizens of Illinois; and
 
17     WHEREAS, The Interstate System has proven to be a vital
18 tool for transporting people and goods from one region to
19 another speedily and safely; and
 
20     WHEREAS, The use of the Interstate System has helped the
21 nation facilitate domestic and global trade and has allowed the
22 nation to create unprecedented economic expansion and
23 opportunities for millions of U.S. citizens; and
 
24     WHEREAS, The Interstate System has enabled diverse
25 communities throughout the United States to come closer
26 together and has allowed United States citizens to remain
27 connected to each other as well as to the larger world; and
 
28     WHEREAS, The Interstate System has made it easier and more
29 enjoyable for Illinois citizens to travel to long-distance

1 destinations and spend time with family members and friends who
2 live far away; and
 
3     WHEREAS, The Interstate System is a pivotal link in the
4 national chain of defense and emergency preparedness efforts;
5 and
 
6     WHEREAS, The Interstate System remains one of the paramount
7 assets of the United States as well as a symbol of human
8 ingenuity and freedom; and
 
9     WHEREAS, The anniversary of the Interstate System provides
10 all citizens with an occasion to honor one of the largest
11 public works achievements of all time and to reflect on how the
12 nation can maintain the effectiveness of the System in the
13 years ahead; therefore, be it
 
14     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
15 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize 2006 as
16 the Golden Anniversary Year of the Dwight D. Eisenhower
17 National System of Interstate and Defense Highways; and be it
18 further
 
19     RESOLVED, We recognize and celebrate the achievements of
20 the Federal Highway Administration, the Illinois Department of
21 Transportation, and the highway construction industry in
22 Illinois, including contractors, designers, engineers, labor,
23 materials producers, and equipment companies, for their
24 contributions to the quality of life of the citizens of
25 Illinois; and be it further
 
26     RESOLVED, That we encourage citizens, communities,
27 governmental agencies, and other organizations to promote and
28 participate in celebratory and educational activities that
29 mark this uniquely important and historic milestone; and be it
30 further

1     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2 presented to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
