1     AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by changing
5 Section 12-208 as follows:
 
6     (625 ILCS 5/12-208)  (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12-208)
7     Sec. 12-208. Signal lamps and signal devices.
8     (a) Every vehicle other than an antique vehicle displaying
9 an antique plate operated in this State shall be equipped with
10 a stop lamp or lamps on the rear of the vehicle which shall
11 display a red or amber light visible from a distance of not
12 less than 500 feet to the rear in normal sunlight and which
13 shall be actuated upon application of the service (foot) brake,
14 and which may but need not be incorporated with other rear
15 lamps. During times when lighted lamps are not required, an
16 antique vehicle may be equipped with a stop lamp or lamps on
17 the rear of such vehicle of the same type originally installed
18 by the manufacturer as original equipment and in working order.
19 However, at all other times, except as provided in subsection
20 (a-1), such antique vehicle must be equipped with stop lamps
21 meeting the requirements of Section 12-208 of this Act.
22     (a-1) An antique vehicle may display a blue light or lights
23 of up to one inch in diameter as part of the vehicle's rear
24 stop lamp or lamps.
25     (b) Every motor vehicle other than an antique vehicle
26 displaying an antique plate shall be equipped with an electric
27 turn signal device which shall indicate the intention of the
28 driver to turn to the right or to the left in the form of
29 flashing lights located at and showing to the front and rear of
30 the vehicle on the side of the vehicle toward which the turn is
31 to be made. The lamps showing to the front shall be mounted on
32 the same level and as widely spaced laterally as practicable

1 and, when signaling, shall emit a white or amber light, or any
2 shade of light between white and amber. The lamps showing to
3 the rear shall be mounted on the same level and as widely
4 spaced laterally as practicable and, when signaling, shall emit
5 a red or amber light. An antique vehicle shall be equipped with
6 a turn signal device of the same type originally installed by
7 the manufacturer as original equipment and in working order.
8     (c) Every trailer and semitrailer shall be equipped with an
9 electric turn signal device which indicates the intention of
10 the driver in the power unit to turn to the right or to the left
11 in the form of flashing red or amber lights located at the rear
12 of the vehicle on the side toward which the turn is to be made
13 and mounted on the same level and as widely spaced laterally as
14 practicable.
15     (d) Turn signal lamps must be visible from a distance of
16 not less than 300 feet in normal sunlight.
17     (e) Motorcycles and motor-driven cycles need not be
18 equipped with electric turn signals. Antique vehicles need not
19 be equipped with turn signals unless such were installed by the
20 manufacturer as original equipment.
21     (f) For purposes of this Section, a custom vehicle or
22 street rod is considered to be in compliance with all signal
23 lamp and signal device requirements if it has passed the
24 approved safety inspection provided for in Section 3-804.1 or
25 3-804.2.

27     Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
28 becoming law.
