HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois learned with sadness of the death of W.
4 Harold Monken of Centralia on Saturday, July 22, 2006; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mr. Monken was born on March 9, 1939, in Centralia
6 to Walter and Wilma (Nettles) Monken; he married Jan Miller on
7 March 10, 1961; and
 
8     WHEREAS, He graduated from Mater Dei High School, Centralia
9 Junior College, and Southern Illinois University; and
 
10     WHEREAS, He was a businessman and owner of Monken Dodge
11 Chrysler Nissan and Monken Buick Pontiac GMC; he was the
12 previous owner of Car City Datsun; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Mr. Monken was a member of St. Mary's Catholic
14 Church in Centralia, where he served many years as an usher and
15 chaired the Diocesan Services Appeal and the St. Mary's
16 Auction; he was a member of the St. Mary's Finance Committee
17 and school board; he was a Fourth Degree Knight of the Knights
18 of Columbus and a member of the Madonna Club, Optimist Club,
19 Jaycees, Elks Lodge, and Loyal Order of the Moose; and
 
20     WHEREAS, He received the Centralia Jaycees Outstanding
21 Citizen Award and was inducted into the Centralia Sports Hall
22 of Fame; he served as chairman of the Centralia Savings Bank
23 Board and was an avid competitor of cutting horses and earned
24 many awards, including first place at the Congress Spring
25 Spectacular; he was a member of the National Cutting Horse
26 Association and was president of the Gateway Cutting Horse
27 Association and the Illinois Cutting Horse Association; and
 
28     WHEREAS, Mr. Monken coached and sponsored numerous
29 baseball, softball, and Little League teams, including the

1 American Legion Team; he served on the Bud Donnewald Memorial
2 Golf Tournament, which raised money for area sports; he also
3 helped raise money for the Centralia Recreational Complex; and
 
4     WHEREAS, He enjoyed time with his family and friends and
5 was an avid bird hunter, outdoorsman, and horse rider; and
 
6     WHEREAS, The passing of W. Harold Monken has been deeply
7 felt by many, especially his wife, Jan; his mother, Wilma
8 Monken; his daughters, Kim McMillan and husband Mike and Shawn
9 Hartmann and husband Kent; his son, Wes Monken and wife Elisha;
10 his sister, Carolyn Crocker and husband Dick; his
11 grandchildren, Megan McMillan, Andrea McMillan, Bredesen
12 Hartmann, Katie Hartmann, Jalyn Monken, and Addison Monken; and
13 his many nephews, nieces, and friends; he was preceded in death
14 by his father, Walter; his grandmother, Sophia Nettles; his
15 brother, Wayne Monken; and his nephew, Troy Crocker; therefore,
16 be it
 
17     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19 we mourn the passing of W. Harold Monken, and we extend our
20 deepest sympathy to his family, friends, and all who knew and
21 loved him; and be it further
 
22     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
23 presented to his family as an expression of our sincerest
24 condolences.
