HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois were deeply saddened to learn of the death of
4 Agnes Josephine Thompson, the mother of former Governor James
5 R. Thompson, of Arlington Heights on January 28, 2005; and
 
6     WHEREAS, She was born Agnes Josephine Swanson in DeKalb on
7 January 20, 1909, the daughter of Swedish immigrants who came
8 to the United States at the turn of the century; and
 
9     WHEREAS, She married James Robert Thompson in 1934 and they
10 had four children; she met her husband in the public library in
11 DeKalb; they were married in 1934, initially settling in
12 Chicago's Garfield Park neighborhood and Galewood before
13 buying a home in Oak Park in the mid-1950s; and
 
14     WHEREAS, She was from the generation of the 1930s and 1940s
15 where her home, husband, and children were her whole life; she
16 was a big reader and imparted a lifelong love of reading to her
17 children; she took great pleasure in that her children all
18 became successful; and
 
19     WHEREAS, When not tending to her children, she played
20 bridge with great passion, continuing to play until a year ago;
21 she also enjoyed a good game of pinochle, which she often
22 played with her children; she lived as full and complete and
23 wonderful a life as possible; and
 
24     WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her husband in 1992;
25 and
 
26     WHEREAS, The passing of Agnes Josephine Thompson will be
27 felt by all who knew and loved her, especially her sons, James,
28 Donald, and Larry; her daughter, Karen Tobin; her seven
29 grandchildren, and her five great-grandchildren; therefore, be

2     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
3 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
4 we mourn the passing of Agnes Josephine Thompson and we extend
5 our sincerest condolences to her family; and be it further
 
6     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7 presented to her family as an expression of our deepest
8 sympathy.
