HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois learned with regret of the death of Hezekiah
4 Davis at the age of 93 on September 23, 2004; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mr. Davis was born in Alabama, but when his
6 parents' farm stopped producing, his family moved to Parkdale,
7 Arkansas to farm; it was there that he met Mazzie Glass, whom
8 he married in 1934; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Davis raised their 11 children on a
10 farm in southeast Arkansas; he was very proud that 7 of his 11
11 children attended college; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Mr. Davis took his civic responsibility
13 seriously; before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed the
14 poll tax, he and his wife eagerly paid the fee to vote; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Mr. Davis was very active in his community; when
16 he retired from farming, he joined a nearby social service
17 agency; he was in charge of maintaining the 16 vans used by its
18 day-care program and of purchasing food for its cafeteria; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Mr. Davis moved to Illinois when he was 87 to live
20 with one of his daughters in Hazel Crest; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Mr. Davis became an active member of the Hazel
22 Crest community; he participated in a local day program and
23 attended political meetings and banquets; and
 
24     WHEREAS, Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his first wife,
25 Mazzie, who passed away in 1981, and by his second wife,
26 Armetha Stenerette; and
 
27     WHEREAS, The passing of Hezekiah Davis will be felt by all

1 who knew and loved him, especially his daughters, Ceola Barnes,
2 Barbara Nelson, and Floretta Davis; his sons, Bennie, Danny,
3 Jesse, and Willie Davis; his stepson, Cedric Stenerette; his 40
4 grandchildren; his 10 great-grandchildren; and his numerous
5 nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
 
6     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
8 mourn, along with all who knew and loved him, the death of
9 Hezekiah Davis; and be it further
 
10     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11 presented to the family of Hezekiah Davis.
