HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Alghia
4 (June) Griffin, Jr.; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Alghia Griffin, Jr. was born in Vicksburg,
6 Mississippi on July 22, 1931; he was the third child born to
7 Rev. Alghia Griffin, Sr. and Maria Bozeman; his primary and
8 elementary school years were completed at Cherry Street School
9 and Bowman High school, in Vicksburg; and
 
10     WHEREAS, He was gifted with an unusual musical ability that
11 can be traced back in his family tree to the 1800s; he was able
12 to play a wide range of instruments, including every wind and
13 string instrument, the complete percussion section, organ, and
14 piano; he was presented the highest outstanding music award for
15 all four years of high school; he was then employed by his
16 uncle, the first black man to organize a band in the Vicksburg
17 area; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Mr. Griffin was called to the Ministry while a
19 member of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Vicksburg, the place for all
20 of his Christian training from childhood to manhood; and
 
21     WHEREAS, He served his country with dignity and pride as
22 Spec. 4th Class Radio Operator for four years in the U.S. Army,
23 during the Korean War; he then relocated to Chicago in 1954;
24 and
 
25     WHEREAS, Mr. Griffin was employed by Jefferson Electric,
26 the Chicago Transit Authority, the Village of Maywood, and the
27 Federal Government for many years; and
 
28     WHEREAS, The passing of Alghia (June) Griffin, Jr. will be
29 deeply felt by many, especially his wife, Diana Griffin; his

1 children, Terry (Bryant), Emanuel, Carl (Kim), and Algheana
2 (Felix); his sisters, Willie Mae Griffin Strong, Bettie Griffin
3 Barry, and Irene Griffin Harvey; his brothers, Herbert (Lydia)
4 Griffin and James (Dorothy) Griffin; his cousin, State
5 Representative Constance Howard; his four grandchildren; and a
6 host of other relatives and friends; and
 
7     WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary;
8 and a daughter, Winnie; therefore, be it
 
9     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
11 mourn the death of Alghia (June) Griffin, Jr. along with all
12 who knew and loved him and extend our sincere condolences to
13 his family and friends; and be it further
 
14     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15 presented to the family of Alghia (June) Griffin, Jr. as a
16 token of our deepest sympathy.
