HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, President Thomas Jefferson instructed Meriwether
3 Lewis and William Clark to lead an expedition to explore the
4 Louisiana Territory in 1804 to gain knowledge of the territory
5 and map a water route to the Pacific Ocean; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Lewis and Clark assembled their party at the
7 confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers at a location
8 now known as Hartford, Illinois; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Their journey into the Louisiana Territory
10 departed from the confluence and began on May 14, 1804; and
 
11     WHEREAS, The anniversary of this event is a unique
12 opportunity to exhibit Illinois' important role in our nation's
13 history; and
 
14     WHEREAS, The commemoration of the journey is having a
15 significant impact on Illinois tourism; the events
16 commemorating the success of Lewis and Clark's journey are
17 being held at the Hartford Interpretive Center May 14 through
18 May 16, 2004; therefore, be it
 
19     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
20 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
21 recognize and honor Lewis and Clark on the two-hundreth
22 anniversary of their expedition; and be it further
 
23     RESOLVED, That we commend and support the Illinois Lewis
24 and Clark Bicentennial Commission, the Village of Hartford, and
25 Lewis and Clark Community College for their work on the Eve of
26 the Discovery National Signature Event on May 13, 2004; and be
27 it further
 
28     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be

2 Commission, the Village of Hartford, and Lewis and Clark
3 Community College as a token of our respect.
