HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois learned with regret of the death of Amanda
4 Sherman on Tuesday, February 17, 2004; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Amanda Sherman was born on January 1, 1910, in
6 Evanston to Charles and Eliza Wideman; she lost her mother at
7 an early age and was indebted to her oldest sister, Alice
8 Jones, who raised her after her mother's death; she married
9 Robert Wallace Sherman; together, they were blessed with ten
10 children; he preceded her in death on March 17, 1948; and
 
11     WHEREAS, A strong faith and inner strength helped Mrs.
12 Sherman to raise her ten children on her own; she worked at
13 several jobs and finally became a Crossing Guard for District
14 18, which allowed her to be home when her children were home;
15 her dedication to her work earned her several commendations and
16 certificates, and she and her family have made many political
17 contributions to the City of Chicago; she was an inspiration
18 and mother figure for many of those with whom she came in
19 contact; and
 
20     WHEREAS, Mrs. Sherman was a life-long member of Wayman
21 A.M.E. Church, but has been an "honorary" member of the church
22 family at Greater Institutional A.M.E. Church since the 1970s;
23 her faith in God was evident to all that knew her and will
24 remain in the hearts and memories of countless people; and
 
25     WHEREAS, The passing of Amanda Sherman has been deeply felt
26 by many, especially her children, former Alderman Niles
27 (Sherlene) Sherman; Charmaine M. Brown, Robert (Peggy),
28 Maynard (Clara), Aubrey, Ronald (Imelda), Douglas, Jo Ann
29 Smith, and Lynn Timmons; her daughter-in-law, Cecilia Sherman;
30 and her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren,
31 great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives,

1 and friends; she was also preceded in death by her son, Lowell;
2 therefore, be it
 
3     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
5 mourn the passing of Amanda Sherman, a member of one of
6 Chicago's outstanding families, and we extend our deepest
7 sympathy to them; and be it further
 
8     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9 presented to the family of Amanda Sherman as an expression of
10 our sincere condolences.
