HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, There are an estimated 58 million overweight
3 Americans with 40 million considered obese and another 3
4 million morbidly obese; and
 
5     WHEREAS, There has been a 76 percent increase in Type II
6 diabetes in adults ages 30-40 years old since 1990, with 80
7 percent of all Type II diabetes cases related to obesity; and
 
8     WHEREAS, The incidence of obesity is also on the rise, with
9 over 14 million children considered overweight or obese; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Studies have suggested that one in four overweight
11 children are already showing early signs of Type II diabetes
12 and 60 percent already have one evident risk factor for
13 developing heart disease; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Of all children diagnosed with Type II diabetes,
15 over 85 percent are considered obese; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Hospital costs associated with childhood obesity
17 have risen from $35 million in 1979 to $127 million in 1999;
18 therefore, be it
 
19     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
20 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
21 the months of January and February shall be known as Children's
22 Nutritional Awareness Months to encourage individuals to
23 develop healthy eating habits and engage in more physical
24 activity.
