HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, School meals must meet certain nutritional
3 standards in order for a school food service program to receive
4 federal subsidies; and
 
5     WHEREAS, These standards now include a requirement that
6 school meals must contain at least 30% or less of their
7 calories from fat and less than 10% of their calories from
8 saturated fat; and
 
9     WHEREAS, In 1993, the United States Department of
10 Agriculture (USDA) began the "School Meals Initiative for
11 Healthy Children", a major reform of the school meal programs
12 with the purpose of improving the nutritional content of school
13 lunches and breakfasts; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Despite these standards and reforms, only 15% of
15 schools nationwide meet the saturated fat standards for
16 lunches; and
 
17     WHEREAS, 3 out of 4 high school students do not eat the
18 minimum recommended daily amount of 5 servings of fruits or
19 vegetables each day; therefore, be it
 
20     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
21 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
22 urge the Illinois State Board of Education to develop
23 guidelines concerning how schools can meet the USDA standards
24 for saturated fat, as well as provide healthier alternatives;
25 and be it further
 
26     RESOLVED, That we urge school districts to design a school
27 lunch menu for at least one week out of every month that meets
28 the USDA saturated fat standards and promotes more nutritional
29 meal selections; and be it further

1     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2 presented to the Illinois State Board of Education for
3 distribution to all school districts.
