SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
305 ILCS 5/12-4.4a new

    Amends the Illinois Public Aid Code. Authorizes the Secretary of Human Services to seek a waiver from the United States Department of Agriculture to allow the State to specify certain foods that may and may not be purchased in Illinois with the benefits funded by the federal Food Stamp Program. Requires the Secretary to consult with members of the General Assembly in developing the waiver and to obtain approval from the General Assembly before implementing the waiver. Requires the Secretary, in consultation with the Department of Public Health and the State Board of Education, to develop a broad public health policy related to improved nutrition and health status.

1     AN ACT concerning food stamps.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Illinois Public Aid Code is amended by
5 adding Section 12-4.4a as follows:
 
6     (305 ILCS 5/12-4.4a new)
7     Sec. 12-4.4a. Food stamp program; waiver to determine food
8 that may be purchased in Illinois; public health policy. The
9 Secretary of Human Services may seek a waiver from the United
10 States Department of Agriculture to allow the State to specify
11 foods that may and may not be purchased in Illinois with
12 benefits funded by the federal Food Stamp Program. The
13 Secretary shall consult with members of the General Assembly in
14 developing the waiver and must obtain the approval of the
15 General Assembly prior to implementing the waiver. The
16 Department of Human Services, in consultation with the
17 Department of Public Aid and the State Board of Education,
18 shall develop a broad public health policy related to improved
19 nutrition and health status.
