SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, On June 7, 1893, Mohandas K. Gandhi, who became
3known the world over as Mahatma Gandhi or Gandhi, was evicted
4from a train after refusing to give up his first class seat
5because the compartment was reserved for whites only; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Gandhi's experience led to the movement of
7Satyagraha, which is a peaceful nonviolence resistance on the
8principles of Ahimsa; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Gandhi was a proponent for the principles of
10Ahimsa as he led and inspired movements for civil rights and
11freedom across the world; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Gandhi adopted nonviolence as a philosophy and an
13ideal way of life; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Gandhi was a leader in India's movement to earn
15independence from the United Kingdom through the means of
16using nonviolence, and he subsequently influenced leaders
17around the world in pursuit of freedom and civil rights,
18including South African anti-apartheid activist and politician
19Nelson Mandela and American minister and activist Dr. Martin
20Luther King Jr.; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare June 7, 2024
3as "Global Gandhi Youth Mission Day" in the State of Illinois;
4and be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That we encourage others to be the change they
6want to see in the world; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to the Gandhi Memorial Foundation of Chicago as a
9symbol of peace.
