SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, January is National Radon Action Month, and all
3Illinois citizens are strongly encouraged to test their homes
4for radon; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas
6that may threaten the health of our citizens and their
7families; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer
9in the U.S. and the leading cause of lung cancer in
10non-smokers; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency
12estimates that radon is responsible for approximately 21,000
13lung cancer deaths each year; and
 
14    WHEREAS, One in 15 homes across the U.S. has an elevated
15radon level, and 41% of homes tested for radon in Illinois have
16high radon levels; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Any home in Illinois may have elevated levels of
18radon, even if neighboring homes do not, and elevated levels
19pose a serious health threat to residents; and

1    WHEREAS, Testing for radon is simple and inexpensive; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Identified radon problems can be fixed; and
 
3    WHEREAS, The Illinois Emergency Management Agency and the
4U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are supporting efforts to
5encourage homeowners to test their homes for radon, mitigate
6elevated levels of radon, and build new homes with
7radon-resistant materials and features; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
9ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare January
102024 as Radon Action Month in the State of Illinois; and be it
11further
 
12    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
13presented to Midwest AARST, the Illinois Emergency Management
14Agency, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
