SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Jeanne St. Julian of Peoria, who
4passed away on September 25, 2023; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jeanne St. Julian was born to Rev. Benjamin and
6Lillian (Graves) Wood in Austin, Texas on May 28, 1934; she was
7raised in the Church of God in Christ, where her father served
8as a reverend; as a young woman, she participated in the Texas
9State Ms. Bronze Pageant, placing third; she received her
10Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from Huston-Tillotson
11College in Austin, Texas; while an undergraduate student, she
12became a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; she
13earned her Master of Arts in Guidance and Counseling from
14Bradley University in Peoria; she also completed postgraduate
15hours at the University of Illinois, Western Illinois
16University, and Illinois State University; she married Grant
17St. Julian Jr. in Beaumont, Texas on December 26, 1955; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Jeanne St. Julian was an educator who devoted
19much of her career to the Peoria Public Schools District 150,
20where she worked as a guidance counselor at Richwoods High
21School, an elementary teacher at Lincoln, White, and Webster
22Schools, and a home counselor at Irving and Lincoln Schools;
23prior to becoming an educator, she worked as a children's

1librarian at the Peoria Public Library, a service
2representative at the Illinois Bell Telephone Company, and a
3counselor for the Neighborhood Youth Corps Summer Programs;
4after retirement, she worked as a study hall supervisor at
5Manual and Richwoods High Schools; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Jeanne St. Julian served on the Catholic
7Interracial Council, the Urban League Guild, the Urban
8League's Tomorrow's Scientists, Technicians and Managers
9Advisory Committee, the Board of Directors of Women's
10Strength, and the Board of Directors of George Washington
11Carver Community Center; she was a life member of the NAACP and
12a member of the State of Illinois Right-to-Read Program; she
13served as mistress of ceremonies for Peoria's annual debutante
14ball for many years; for her extensive community service, she
15was inducted into the African American Hall of Fame of
16Downstate Illinois; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Jeanne St. Julian's commitment to education and
18the Peoria community led her, along with her family, to create
19two local scholarships, the Peoria Tri-County Urban League's
20TSTM St. Julian Family Scholarship and the Illinois Central
21College Grant St. Julian Keep Jazz Alive! Scholarship; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Jeanne St. Julian was an excellent seamstress, an
23avid crafter, and a world-class shopper who was known for her

1creativity, her exquisite sense of style, and her skills in
2acting and public speaking; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Jeanne St. Julian was preceded in death by her
4husband; her parents; her brother, Benjamin Wood Jr.; and her
5sisters, Daisy Jackson, Marie Wood, and Jackie Wood; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Jeanne St. Julian is survived by her children,
7Grant St. Julian III, Andrea Renee, and Tanya Suzanne; her
8daughter-in-law, Judy St. Julian; her son-in-law, Michael
9Alexander; her grandchildren, Andrew (Paige) St. Julian and
10Stacie (Peter) Paciorek; five great-grandchildren; and her
11brothers, James (Hannah) Wood and Michael Wood; therefore, be
12it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
15Jeanne St. Julian and extend our sincere condolences to her
16family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
17further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to the family of Jeanne St. Julian as an expression
20of our deepest sympathy.
