SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a chronic
3cardiovascular disease involving thickening of the heart
4muscle and can potentially lead to debilitating symptoms and
5serious complications, including heart failure, atrial
6fibrillation, stroke, and, in rare cases, sudden cardiac
7death; and
 
8    WHEREAS, HCM is the most common inheritable heart disease
9and can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity
10with a reported prevalence ranging from 1 in 200 to 1 in 500 in
11the general population; and
 
12    WHEREAS, An estimated 700,000 to 1,650,000 people in the
13United States have HCM, yet 85% of them may remain
14undiagnosed; and
 
15    WHEREAS, HCM shares symptoms with other common
16cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, including shortness of
17breath, chest pain, fatigue, palpitations, and fainting; this
18makes it difficult to distinguish HCM from these other
19diseases; and
 
20    WHEREAS, All-cause mortality risk is three to four times
21higher in patients with HCM than that of the general

1population; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Knowing one's medical history and any signs and
3symptoms of HCM are important first steps in receiving an
4accurate diagnosis of HCM; and
 
5    WHEREAS, A healthcare provider must conduct a thorough
6screening with cardiac health questions to help identify a
7risk of both genetic and congenital cardiac disorders; and
 
8    WHEREAS, A healthcare provider may conduct several tests,
9including an echocardiogram, a cardiac MRI, or genetic
10testing, to confirm a family history of HCM and must examine
11the heart to diagnose HCM; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Following a diagnosis of HCM, it is important for
13patients to work with their healthcare provider to learn more
14about their disease and understand different management
15options, including prescription medicines and surgical
16treatment options that may help; and
 
17    WHEREAS, The fourth Wednesday in February is an
18appropriate day to observe Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
19Awareness Day; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare February
222, 2023 as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day in the
3State of Illinois in order to raise public awareness about
4hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a serious public health issue;
5and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That we acknowledge the critical importance of
7hypertrophic cardiomyopathy awareness to improve
8cardiovascular health in the state and support raising
9awareness of the consequences of undiagnosed and untreated
10hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and of the need to seek
11appropriate care for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy; and be it
12further
 
13    RESOLVED, That we respectfully urge the Governor to issue
14an annual proclamation recognizing the fourth Wednesday in
15February as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day and call
16upon the people of Illinois to observe the day with
17appropriate programs and activities.
