SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
20 ILCS 2705/2705-617 new

    Amends the Department of Transportation Law of the Civil Administrative Code of Illinois. Requires the Department of Transportation to provide higher education student loan repayment assistance in the form of an annual after-tax bonus of $15,000 per year to any engineer, and $7,500 to any engineering technician, for not more than 5 years, who are employed by the Department if: (i) the engineer or engineering technician is a graduate of a community college, college or university located in the State; (ii) the engineer or engineering technician provides documentation to the Department of the repayment of higher education student loans taken to attend a college or university located in the State; and (iii) the engineer or engineering technician remains in the employ of the Department for at least 5 years. Provides that if the engineer or engineering technician leaves the employ of the Department prior to serving 5 years, the engineer or engineering technician must return all bonuses made to the engineer or engineering technician by the Department. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning State government.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Department of Transportation Law of the
5Civil Administrative Code of Illinois is amended by adding
6Section 2705-617 as follows:
 
7    (20 ILCS 2705/2705-617 new)
8    Sec. 2705-617. Student loan repayment assistance for
9engineers and engineering technicians. The Department shall
10provide higher education student loan repayment assistance in
11the form of an annual after-tax bonus of $15,000 per year, for
12not more than 5 years, to any engineer employed by the
13Department, and $7,500 per year, for not more than 5 years, to
14any engineering technician employed by the Department, subject
15to the following:
16        (1) the engineer is a graduate of a college or
17    university located in this State or the engineering
18    technician is a graduate of a community college, college,
19    or university in located this State;
20        (2) the engineer or engineering technician provides
21    documentation to the Department of the repayment of higher
22    education student loans taken to attend a college or
23    university located in this State;

1        (3) the engineer or engineering technician remains in
2    the employ of the Department for at least 5 years; and
3        (4) if the engineer or engineering technician leaves
4    the employ of the Department prior to serving 5 years, the
5    engineer or engineering technician must return all bonuses
6    made to the engineer or engineering technician by the
7    Department pursuant to this Section.
 
8    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
9becoming law.
