HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to acknowledge the devastation that took
4place in the Village of Sherman when a category 2 tornado
5touched down on March 31, 2023; and
 
6    WHEREAS, At 5:54 pm, the National Weather Service in
7Lincoln reported that a tornado was spotted 20 miles
8west-southwest of Sherman, moving eastward from Morgan County,
9where tornadoes had been reported 30 minutes prior; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The tornado traveled through Sherman, causing
11damage to structures and a subdivision along the Interstate 55
12Business Loop, over the course of approximately 5.5 miles; and
 
13    WHEREAS, The tornado damaged 30 to 40 homes, destroyed
14numerous trees and power lines, and produced a gas leak, but
15thankfully, no one was injured or killed; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The tornado continued its course and struck the
17Walker Standardbreds horse stable, severely damaging several
18barns on the property and scattering horses; while it was
19initially reported that 32 horses were missing, all horses
20were eventually located thanks to the efforts of community
21members joining staff in finding and recovering the animals;

2    WHEREAS, The tornado was the result of a strong,
3low-pressure system that moved through the Midwest for much of
4the day on Friday, leading to several lines of storms with
5winds topping at 130 mph; and
 
6    WHEREAS, While the tornado was devastating to parts of
7Sherman, residents have remained strong and resilient, helping
8one another to restore order and rebuild; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
10HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11we acknowledge the destruction to the Village of Sherman due
12to a category 2 tornado that struck on March 31, 2023; and be
13it further
 
14    RESOLVED, That we recognize the efforts and hard work of
15first responders, including members of the Sherman Police
16Department and the Sherman Area Fire District, and community
17members, in helping those affected by the storm; and be it
18further
 
19    RESOLVED, That we wish those affected by the storm the
20best in their efforts to rebuild; and be it further

1    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2presented to Trevor J. Clatfelter, the Mayor of the Village of
3Sherman, as a sign of our esteem and respect.
