HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize the life and service of Jon
4Charles Sapp, who was killed in action defending his country
5during the Vietnam War; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Jon Sapp was born to Charles and Mary (Frandin)
7Sapp on July 31, 1943; he graduated from Ottawa High School and
8studied history at college in Nebraska with plans on becoming
9a history teacher; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Jon Sapp followed in his father's footsteps and
11joined the U.S. Army; he took his basic combat training at Fort
12Leonard Wood, Missouri and advanced infantry training at Fort
13Ord, California; he was then sent to Non-Commissioned Officers
14School at Fort Benning, Georgia; he graduated, was promoted to
15staff sergeant, and was made a squad leader; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Jon Sapp received orders sending him to Vietnam
17on January 10, 1970; he joined the 9th Infantry Division of
18World War II fame; his regiment was the 60th Infantry
19Regiment, which has been formed in 1861 during the Civil War;
20he was part of the 2nd Battalion, Company A, Air Assault; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Jon Sapp arrived in the Mekong Delta south of

1Saigon, Vietnam on January 22, 1970; as a squad leader, he led
2his men on patrols to protect the perimeter and keep a check on
3the enemy; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Jon Sapp's base camp was attacked by the North
5Vietnamese in April of 1970; his hut was destroyed, and he lost
6most of his personal effects; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Jon Sapp was killed in action on April 19, 1970 as
8his unit took part in a firefight in retaliation for the attack
9on his base camp; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Jon Sapp was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge,
11the Silver Star, the Air Medal, the Purple Heart, the National
12Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam
13Campaign Medal; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
15HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16we recognize the life and service of Jon Charles Sapp, who was
17killed in action defending his country during the Vietnam War;
18and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of Jon Sapp as an expression of our
21deepest sympathy.
