HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize Loyola University Chicago,
4the only Jesuit Catholic University in the State of Illinois;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago originally opened its
7doors as St. Ignatius College on September 5, 1870; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago's School of Law opened
9in 1908, admitting both women and men; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago's Stritch School of
11Medicine was founded in 1920; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago, initially having no
13home field for its football team, adopted the nickname
14"Ramblers" for all of its athletic teams in 1926; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago opened Arrupe College,
16an innovative two-year college for Chicago-area students with
17limited financial means, in the fall of 2015; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago additionally includes
19the Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health, the

1Niehoff School of Nursing, the Quinlan School of Business, the
2College of Arts & Sciences, and the Schools of Education,
3Social Work, and Communications; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Today, Loyola University Chicago enrolls more
5than 17,000 students seeking undergraduate, graduate, and
6professional degrees, with 42% of its study body being
7students of color and 98% of its undergraduate students
8receiving grants and/or scholarships; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago had 2,418 students
10receive a Monetary Assistance Program (MAP) grant in 2023,
11more than one-half of all Illinois undergraduates attending
12the university; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago inaugurated Mark C.
14Reed, Ed.D., as its 25th president on November 3, 2022; and
 
15    WHEREAS, President Dr. Reed has been a distinguished
16leader and educator at Jesuit institutions for more than 20
17years, previously serving as president of St. Joseph's
18University in Pennsylvania for seven years and holding several
19leadership positions at Fairfield University in Connecticut
20for 15 years; and
 
21    WHEREAS, President Dr. Reed is a student-centered leader

1committed to being an active participant in the academic,
2spiritual, and social life of Loyola University Chicago; and
 
3    WHEREAS, President Dr. Reed serves as chair of the Council
4of Presidents for the Atlantic 10 Conference, which Loyola
5University Chicago joined in July 2022; he also serves on the
6boards of the American Council on Education, the Association
7of Catholic Colleges and Universities, and the Association of
8Jesuit Colleges and Universities; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Loyola University Chicago will celebrate its
10153rd anniversary in September 2023; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
12HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13we recognize Loyola University Chicago, the only Jesuit
14Catholic University in the State of Illinois; and be it
15further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the President of Loyola University Chicago, Mark
18C. Reed, Ed.D., as an expression of our esteem and respect.
