HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize Deputy Trevin Smith of Clay
4County for his bravery in the line of duty on March 13th, 2023;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, At approximately 4:32 p.m. on March 13, 2023,
7fellow Deputy Luke Durre was on routine patrol in the area of
8North State Road and Hardy Hills Road; he observed a gold
9Chevrolet Impala stuck in the ditch on the south side of the
10road facing west; when he approached the car, he noticed there
11was smoke coming from the car, which was still running, and the
12driver, a 78 year old male, was still pushing on the
13accelerator causing the motor to rev at a high RPMs; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Deputy Durre was able to get the car in park and
15then shut off the engine; the vehicle was filling up with smoke
16and was in a position where the driver's side door was pinned
17against the ground and would only open a few inches; the
18passenger's side door was blocked by personal belongings that
19the driver had in the vehicle; a short time later, flames began
20to emerge from underneath the vehicle; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Deputy Durre attempted to pull the driver out
22through the driver's side window but was unable to do so; he

1was able to pry the door open with assistance from Deputy
2Trevin Smith and North Clay Fireman Weston Kemmerer, lift the
3driver out the vehicle, and carry him to safety; Deputy
4Smith's efforts were crucial in assisting Deputy Durre and
5freeing the driver, who was transported to a nearby hospital
6for treatment; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Deputy Smith's actions and direct intervention
8were instrumental in saving and preserving the driver's life;
9therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
11HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
12we honor Deputy Trevin Smith of Clay County for his heroic
13actions on March 13th, 2023; and be it further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to Deputy Smith as an expression of our esteem and
16respect.
