SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Thurman Edward Stewart of Woodson, who
4passed away on December 18, 2022; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Thurman Stewart was born to Hubert W. and Pauline
6Bridges Stewart in Trigg County, Kentucky on June 13, 1936; he
7attended the University of Kentucky, where he earned his
8Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, two master's
9degrees, and his Ph.D. in Physics; he later earned his Master
10of Divinity from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in
11Kansas City, Missouri; he married Carol Ann Hoback in Hettick,
12Illinois on November 18, 1978; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Thurman Stewart taught physics at Tennessee State
14University in Nashville prior to entering the seminary; he
15later served as a minister in Hettick for many years; he also
16helped found the Illinois Southern Baptist Disaster Relief
17Ministry 40 years ago; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Thurman Stewart was a member of the Lincoln
19Avenue Baptist Church in Jacksonville; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Thurman Stewart enjoyed fishing and hunting; he
21was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing most of the produce he

1raised; he also enjoyed making hiking sticks and giving them
2away to family and friends and playing his harmonica for his
3family and children in the disaster relief program; he spent
4his winter months in Florida, where he walked the beach and
5collected shells and shark teeth; he was an avid St. Louis
6Cardinals and University of Kentucky fan; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Thurman Stewart was preceded in death by his
8daughter, Debbie Stewart, and his brother, Larry (surviving
9wife, Gloria) Stewart; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Thurman Stewart is survived by his wife; his
11daughter, Suzanne (Rodney) Cottrell; his grandchildren, U.S.
12Air Force Staff Sergeant Chris Young, Jessica (Craig) Thomas,
13and Alex (Meagan) Young; his great-grandchildren, Lucas and
14Chloe; his brothers, Levi (Shirley) Stewart and Lonnie
15Stewart; his 10 nieces; his 13 nephews; his seven
16great-nieces; and his eight great-nephews; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
18ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
19Thurman Edward Stewart and extend our sincere condolences to
20his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
21further
 
22    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
