SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Frieda "Fritzie" (Weiss) Fritzshall,
4who passed away on June 19, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Fritzie Fritzshall was born in Klucarky,
6Czechoslovakia on August 21, 1929; when the Nazis invaded her
7country in 1944, her family was forced into a ghetto before
8being deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp,
9and the Nazis murdered her mother, two younger brothers, and
10other family members; she endured torture at Auschwitz and a
11related forced labor camp for one year; after escaping during
12a death march, she was finally freed by the Soviet Army in
131945; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Fritzie Fritzshall immigrated to the United
15States after the war, where she was reunited with her father;
16she married Norman Fritzshall, a World War II veteran who had
17been a prisoner of war in the Pacific theater, and he preceded
18her in death in 2003; she worked as a hairdresser; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Fritzie Fritzshall was a longtime advocate for
20preserving the stories and legacy of Holocaust survivors; she
21served as president of the Illinois Holocaust Museum &
22Education Center, the third largest Holocaust museum in the

1world; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Fritzie Fritzshall spent her life fighting
3against hatred and prejudice and encouraging people to become
4upstanders rather than bystanders; she was relentless in
5combatting hatred by sharing her story as a survivor of the
6Holocaust and her insights on anti-Semitism and the refugee
7crisis; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Fritzie Fritzshall was the wife of the late
9Norman; the mother of Steven (Hinda Meadow) Fritzshall; the
10grandmother of Scott and Andy Fritzshall; the sister of two
11late brothers; the daughter of the late Herman and Sarah; and
12the aunt, cousin, and friend of many; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
15Frieda "Fritzie" (Weiss) Fritzshall and honor her service to
16the people of Illinois; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Fritzie Fritzshall as an expression
19of our deepest sympathy and in gratitude for her work and her
20lifetime of public service.
