SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Esequiel Bernardo "Bernie" Rangel,
4formerly of Silvis, who passed away on September 9, 2022; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Bernie Rangel was born to Hilario and Lena
6(Blanco) Rangel in Moline on September 28, 1945; he served in
7the U.S. Army; he then served as an instructor in the U.S.
8Marine Corps Reserves and the U.S. Army Reserves; he was
9honorably discharged with the rank of master sergeant after
10over 30 years of service; he married Catherine (Coker)
11Creighton on the beach at MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa,
12Florida on September 8, 2019; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Bernie Rangel was passionate about learning; he
14graduated from United Township High School in 1963, where he
15excelled in cross country and wrestling and later taught; he
16attended Black Hawk College and Augustana College; he received
17his Bachelor of Science from Southern Illinois University
18Carbondale; he earned technical certificates in welding, auto
19body mechanics, diesel mechanics, and auto repair from Scott
20Community College; he was in the process of earning his
21graduate degree from Western Illinois University when his
22devotion to serving as a caretaker for his parents resulted in
23an 11-year pause in his studies; and

1    WHEREAS, Bernie Rangel worked at Rock Island Lines, ADM,
2and International Harvester; he retired as a union carpenter;
3and
 
4    WHEREAS, Bernie Rangel had many interests, including
5officiating wrestling, volleyball, basketball, football,
6softball, and baseball; while his favorite sport was
7basketball, he was most proud of his collegiate volleyball
8officiating experience; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Bernie Rangel was preceded in death by his
10parents and his siblings, Richard Rangel, Arthur Rangel,
11Dolores Rangel, Hilario (Henry) Rangel, and Bernadette
12Schaecher; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Bernie Rangel is survived by his wife, Catherine
14Creighton; his stepson, Paul (Sarah) Creighton; his
15step-grandchildren, Miley and Owen Creighton; his siblings,
16Estella (John Morgan) Rangel, Cecilia Rangel, and Mike Rangel;
17his brother-in-law, Maurice Schaecher; and numerous nieces,
18nephews, and cousins; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
21Esequiel Bernardo "Bernie" Rangel and extend our sincere

1condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
2him; and be it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to the family of Bernie Rangel as an expression of
