SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Jannie Smith, who passed away on March
426, 2022; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jannie Smith was born to Will and Carrie Jones in
6Evergreen, Alabama on February 6, 1927; she married Clarence
7"Smitty" Smith on August 3, 1963; a studious and motivated
8child, she received her early education in Johnsonville,
9Alabama; she attended cosmetology school and received her
10license in New Jersey; she continued her educational
11aspirations after moving to Chicago and obtained her
12certification as a CNA from Moraine Valley Community College;
13and
 
14    WHEREAS, Jannie Smith worked at the Westside VA and Little
15Company of Mary Hospital; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Jannie Smith volunteered with Consuela York in
17the Prison Ministry; she also volunteered at various food
18panties around the City of Chicago and was an election judge
19for 25 years; her love for children led her to South Central
20Community Services, where she learned the importance of and
21need for helping other children; she was a foster grandmother
22and cared for 12 children during her 95 years; a proud mother

1of six children, she was a surrogate mother to many children
2who resided in her home and adopted three, raising them as her
3own; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Jannie Smith was deeply committed to her faith
5and served her church as a Sunday School teacher, a faithful
6choir member, a Baptist Training Union (BTU) teacher, a
7mission worker, and a child evangelist with the Good News
8Club, in which she received a certification of training; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Jannie Smith loved cooking for her family,
10friends, and church and especially enjoyed, stylish clothes,
11fancy cars, good food, and great conversation; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Jannie Smith was preceded in death by her husband
13and her daughter, Shirley Mae Crook; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Jannie Smith is survived by her daughters,
15Barbara Ann Cook, Valerie Jerriel Walker (Denton), Cherry Lynn
16Patterson (Searl), Sonia Sabrina McAfee (Cannon), Sharita
17Princess Smith-Bolden, and Shakeda Princess Smith; her special
18daughter, NeNe King; her two sons, John (Phyllis) Lesley
19Sanders and Amun Smith; her 22 grandchildren; her 18
20great-grandchildren; her three great-great-grandchildren; her
21nieces and nephews; her cousins; her friends; her two very
22special friends, Exie Hall and Ms. Kay; and the Household of

1Faith; therefore, be it
 
2    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
3ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
4Jannie Smith and extend our sincere condolences to her family,
5friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Jannie Smith as an expression of our
8deepest sympathy.
