SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Betty Maria Harwell, who passed away
4on October 22, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Betty Harwell was born to Jesse and Melodia
6"Melody" Brister in Bogalusa, Louisiana on January 25, 1943;
7she attended Corpus Christi Elementary School and St. Thomas
8Apostle High School, both in Chicago; she married Lawrence W.
9Harwell Jr. on November 17, 1962, and he preceded her in death
10in 2004; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Betty Harwell previously worked at Zenith
12Electronics and Libby's; she later worked at the Wrigley
13Company; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Betty Harwell was deeply committed to her faith
15and was a dedicated member of St. Sabina Catholic Church,
16where she served as a Sunday school teacher, a Eucharistic
17minister, and a member of the hospitality ministry; she
18belonged to the leadership committee of the 106-Block Club in
19Chicago, and she was a social justice advocate and a firm
20believer in cultivating healthy communities; she enjoyed
21spending quality time with family and friends; and

1    WHEREAS, Betty Harwell never ceased to learn and grow
2spiritually, mentally, and emotionally; she was an avid
3champion for being the change you want to see in the world; she
4leaves behind a great legacy of strength, wisdom, faith, and
5togetherness; she was greatly loved and will be missed by
6many; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Betty Harwell was preceded in death by her
8husband; her parents; and her siblings, Charles Brister and
9Melvin Morgan; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Betty Harwell is survived by her siblings, Joseph
11Brister, Johnetta Morgan, Victor Morgan, Mary Morgan, Barbara
12Morgan, Carl Morgan, Yolanda Morgan, Linda Morgan, and Yvette
13Morgan; her children, Bryant L. Harwell (Patricia), Eric V.
14Harwell (Robyn), and Derrick A. Harwell (Sherizod); the
15children she shared with her husband, Beverly Ryan, LeRoy
16Harwell, and Marvin Nunn (Cynthia); and her many grandchildren
17and great-children; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
20Betty Maria Harwell and extend our sincere condolences to her
21family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
22further
