SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Dr. Robert "Bob" M. Moriarty, who
4passed away on April 6, 2021 at the age of 87; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Bob Moriarty was born to James and Mary (Cleary)
6Moriarty in New York City on October 9, 1933; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Bob Moriarty graduated with a Bachelor of Science
8degree from Fordham University in 1955; he received a PhD in
9Organic Chemistry from Princeton University in 1959; he
10completed postdoctoral research at both the University of
11Munich and Harvard University; other scholastic
12accomplishments include fellowships with the Fulbright
13Program, NIH, and NATO; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Bob Moriarty built a teaching and research career
15at the University of Illinois at Chicago; his latest title was
16professor emeritus; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Bob Moriarty was an international expert and
18leader on the subject of iodine chemistry; this expertise
19garnered him accolades from the American Chemical Society,
20including the 2005 Award for Creative Research and
21Applications of Iodine Chemistry; and

1    WHEREAS, Outside of academia, Bob Moriarty founded the
2pharmaceutical research company Steroids LTD in the 1980s; the
3company was purchased by United Therapeutics; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Bob Moriarty was also a sportsman and automobile
5enthusiast; he operated a second classroom at GingerMan
6Raceway in South Haven, Michigan where he taught driving
7lessons; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Bob Moriarty had a soft spot for rescue dogs; his
9compassionate kennel included Luke, Andy, Barton, Stetson,
10Austin, and Emma; and
 
11    WHEREAS, At the time of his passing, Bob Moriarty resided
12in Michiana Shores, Indiana; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Bob Moriarty is survived by his wife, Mary; his
14children, Marie Castellano, Annika (Scott) Bruggeworth, and
15David Moriarty; his stepchildren, Shelley (John) Rousseau and
16Jennifer (Jeff) Appenzeller; and his seven grandchildren;
17therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
20Dr. Robert M. Moriarty and extend our sincere condolences to

3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to the family of Bob Moriarty an expression of our
5deepest sympathy.
