SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Malik Alim, a 28 year old father,
4friend, community leader, activist, and organizer, who passed
5away tragically on August 20, 2021; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Malik Alim's work included community organizing,
7storytelling, podcast production, and writing; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Malik Alim cultivated and nurtured community
9wherever he went; he encouraged people to envision a better
10world and to unite together to make it possible; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Malik Alim loved his children, his partner, his
12family, and his friends; he loved to help his community and
13worked to organize, inspire, and provide guidance; he was a
14proud father and constantly made everyone in every room he
15entered feel safe and supported; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Malik Alim understood how people, regardless of
17identity or political affiliation, were connected and impacted
18by social injustices; he encouraged and welcomed collaboration
19and taught and learned from anyone fortunate enough to cross
20his path; and

1    WHEREAS, Malik Alim was deeply committed to his work and
2was pivotal in creating a safer Illinois for all through his
3work on the SAFE-T Act and the Pre-Trial Fairness Act; he
4worked tirelessly for liberation, voting rights, freedom, and
5love; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Malik Alim valued public education and took any
7opportunity to shed light on social injustices and the
8importance of liberation; he spoke on panels, visited
9classrooms from primary schools to universities, created
10original media, and produced events; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Malik Alim centered his humanity and the humanity
12of all those around him in whatever he did; he approached his
13work with brilliance, grace, kindness, and dignity and created
14a beloved community in every space through which he passed;
15and
 
16    WHEREAS, Malik Alim's work will live and be shared through
17generations, and his children will be able to understand the
18impact their father made on this world; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
21Malik Alim and extend our sincere condolences to his family,
22friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

1    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2presented to the family of Malik Alim as an expression of our
3deepest sympathy.
