SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Derald Scott Brown of Lincoln, who passed away on February 14, 2021; and

WHEREAS, Scott Brown was born in Decatur on June 28, 1955; he was the son of Derald A. and Shirley R. Sarver Brown; he graduated from Warrensburg-Latham High School in 1973; he attended the Police Training Institute Basic Law Enforcement Class #1023 from October 10, 1994 to December 16, 1994; he attended D.A.R.E. instructor school from September 20, 1998 to October 2, 1998; he married Dawn Ellen Coers on October 23, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Scott Brown was employed at Wagner Castings in Decatur for 10 years and at the Turris Coal Mine for five years; and

WHEREAS, Scott Brown was hired as a deputy for Logan County on September 1, 1994, and he retired after 21 years on February 28, 2015; he also worked as a police officer in Mt. Pulaski for 5 years; he was instrumental in the Effective Youth Program at local schools, dating back to 2002; he served as an Illinois Training and Standards Board certified instructor in Control and Arrest Tactics since 2007; he was awarded a 20-year D.A.R.E. instructor plaque in 2018; after retirement, he worked as a security officer for the Logan County Courthouse; and

WHEREAS, Scott Brown began the Lincoln Taekwondo Center in 1980, where he taught Taekwondo for 41 years; he believed the school belonged to the community, hence the name Lincoln Taekwondo; he worked to better the community by teaching courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit; he trained countless national and international competition teams; he only awarded 43 black belts in 41 years to keep the value of the black belt intact; and

WHEREAS, Scott Brown was committed to his faith; he was a member and deacon of the Prairieland Christian Church in Hartsburg; he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather; he will be remembered for being a true mentor and friend; and

WHEREAS, Scott Brown is survived by his wife; his children, Loan N. Nguyen (Binh) Duong, Thao N. (Michael) Mayberry, Glendon (Andrea) Bradley, Grant (Kelsey Voss) Bradley, and Andrew Scott (Kami) Brown; his sisters, Kathy S. (Rick) Fite and Sarah (Donovan) Lacox; and his grandchildren, Olivia Brown, Jessica Nguyen, Christopher Duong, Chase Mayberry, Emily Mayberry, Gabriel Bradley, Duke Bradley, and Mason Voss; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Derald Scott Brown and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Scott Brown as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
