SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Jesse J. Perez, who passed away on
4November 27, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jesse Perez was born in Moline to Jose and
6Francisca (Cervantes) Perez on August 6, 1924; he served in
7the U.S. Navy for 20 years and earned the rank of chief petty
8officer; during his military service, he married Reiko Ida in
9Sasebo, Nagasaki, Japan, and she preceded him in death in
10February 2006; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Upon retiring from the U.S. Navy, Jesse Perez
12began his career at the Rock Island Arsenal and worked there
13for 30 years; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Jesse Perez was known for his generous heart, for
15sharing his wisdom, and for being an advocate for civil and
16humanitarian rights; he belonged to the American G.I. Forum,
17which is dedicated to addressing problems of discrimination
18and inequities endured by Hispanic veterans; he was a member
19of numerous community organizations, but he was especially
20committed to the Floreciente neighborhood; his love for the
21community was only surpassed by his love for family,
22especially his grandsons; he will be remembered for

1encouraging all he met to be their better selves; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Jesse Perez was preceded in death by his parents;
3his wife; his sisters, Manuela (Nellie) Sanchez, Jane Pena,
4Rose Mary Foster, and Isabella Perez; his brothers, Seferino
5(Don) Perez, Rufus (Buck) Perez, and Gregoria Perez; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Jesse Perez is survived by his daughter, Franki
7(Phil) Cunningham; his grandsons, Nick (Alexandra) Cunningham
8and Alex (Amber) Cunningham; his great-grandson, Miles
9Cunningham; and his many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
12Jesse J. Perez and extend our sincere condolences to his
13family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
14further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Jesse Perez as an expression of our
17deepest sympathy.
